Light – and specifically blue light – plays a fundamental role in many biological and physiological processes in humans. By understanding how light acts, and leveraging its expertise in LED and textile technology, Philips has created a unique platform for a host of effective light-based therapies. The first of these is the BlueTouch Pain Relief Patch.
A huge and pressing need
At least 37% of adults around the world suffer from muscle and joint pain, whether acute or chronic. Chronic pain is experienced by about one in every five adults in Europe. Back pain is the leading cause of disability amongst 20-45 year-olds in the US.
Chronic muscle/joint pain sufferers use a cocktail of solutions to tackle their problem, but almost half of them find current solutions inadequate at meeting their needs. Philips’ validated insights shows that muscle pain sufferers want a discreet solution that gives all-day pain relief in a natural way and also deals with the cause of the pain. They are looking for effective and safe solutions beyond pain killers.
The healing capacity of blue light
Within the BlueTouch Pain Relief Patch, LEDs are mounted on textile inside a flexible, comfortable and wearable pad, allowing close-to-skin/body application.
The Philips BlueTouch Pain Relief Patch uses blue LED light to induce production of Nitric Oxide (NO) in the skin. NO is proven to trigger a number of protective and preventive processes in the body, helping to heal in a natural manner. It relaxes muscles through improved blood circulation, resulting in pain relief. The primary action mechanism for BlueTouch Pain Relief Patch is light; heat is secondary, enhancing the pain-relief effect.
The BlueTouch Pain Relief Patch is classified as a low-risk class 2a medical device: it does not emit any harmful UV radiation, thus enabling safe treatment at home or on the move.
Philips and pain relief
Philips already offers infrared lighting products that provide muscle pain relief through deep heat penetration. The BlueTouch Pain Relief Patch builds on these capabilities to deliver an attractive, flexible and wearable device that uses blue LEDs to relieve muscle pain, starting with the back. We are looking to extend this approach to treat many other skin and systemic conditions. Examples of potential applications include a blanket for treating jaundice in newborns, and home treatment of psoriasis.
